Public Health In Pursuit of Voting Rights for All
Overview
July 9, 2026 | 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. CT
Join the Network as we host the Southern Poverty Law Center and Institute for Responsive Government for a discussion about voting rights and public health. Southern Poverty Law Center will unpack what the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Louisiana v. Callais means for voting rights, the public’s health, and public health. Speakers will discuss the connections between health and democracy—for individuals, communities, and the public health system—and identify ways for public health to join the voting rights movement to increase civic and voter participation.
Attend this webinar to:
- Learn about the relationship between health and democracy
- Explore the ways in which our votes shape the systems and institutions responsible for protecting and improving our health, including what health departments and other institutions and actors are legally empowered to do, the resources with which they may operate, the processes they must undergo to take actions, and who makes what decisions and who must be involved in decision-making processes
- Familiarize yourself with recent voting rights developments that have major health and equity implications
- Connect with a community interested in making government and public health work for the people
- Contribute to efforts seeking to build systems that increase trust in government, and in turn, a healthy democracy that enables the public’s health to also flourish
