Despite the drug’s Schedule I status under federal law, state medical marijuana programs have developed rapidly. Today, more than half of all states permit some form of medical marijuana use, and the majority of these laws were enacted within the past decade. As a result, state and local governments and health agencies are largely playing catch-up to determine the scope of these new laws as well as their impact on public health.
This survey provides a summary of the provisions regulating the consumption, distribution, and sale of medical marijuana in each state and the District of Columbia that has enacted a medical marijuana program.
