Primer: FSMA Section 101 - Inspection of Records

In an effort to improve the safety of the nation’s food supply, the historic FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) was signed into law on January 4, 2011. The FSMA places a new focus on our nation’s ability to prevent foodborne illness, while strengthening our ability to respond to outbreaks.

Section 101 of the FSMA expands the FDA's authority to access and copy records relating to potentially dangerous food items. This primer explores the FDA’s record inspection authority based on the revisions implemented by the FSMA and the potential effects on public health and industry.
