Gun violence in hospital settings has become an alarming trend. To counter threats from active shooters, hospitals have implemented various policies and practices to assist staff in responding to dangerous situations. There are also several ways to use law as a tool to prevent gun violence in hospitals.

Minnesota recently passed a bill aimed at protecting children in foster care from the dangers of secondhand smoke. The bill adds a “safe, healthy smoke-free home environment” to existing requirements for prospective foster parents before a placement is made.

Reported incidences of gonorrhea are on the rise, with many more cases going undetected. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) presents an important opportunity to help combat Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) by requiring new health insurance plans to provide screening and preventive services recommended with an A or B rating by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). However, the USPSTF only recommends gonorrhea screening for women.
